The War of the Saints by Jorge Amado, Gregory Rabassa
Jorge Amado (1912-2001) is perhaps the best-known Brazilian writer in the world. In many of his works, naturalistic themes are mixed with obscene humor and the magical atmosphere of the humble people of Bahia is described. At the age of eighteen he published his first novel, The Country of the Carnival (1931). Land of the endless (1944), considered one of his masterpieces, describes the hard life of workers on cocoa plantations. In 1961 he was elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Doña Flor and her two husbands (1966), perhaps her most famous novel, was made into a film by Bruno Barreto in 1976.
Gregory Rabassa (born 9 March 1922) is a prominent literary translator from Spanish and Portuguese to English.
